Have you been thinking about a way to get into infosec?

I’m sure you have seen or read many posts or tweets about getting into information security. In most cases, I see a majority of the posts talking about technical ways into the industry. That’s cool if that path interests you but it’s definitely not the only way into infosec role. There are technical and non-technical roles available.

My experience has taught me there are may ways to accomplish this goal. Here was my path:

1. Help Desk / Building Computers from scratch.
2. Computer / Network support
3. Cloud Support
4. Security Analyst / Vulnerability Scanning
5. Security Engineering / Consulting

I’ve come across many people who came from other industries whose skills translate into the role or they learned the necessary skills to perform the job.

What can you do to start your transition into a role?

1. Start today researching. Don’t put it off because it will still take the same time to get into the role you want.
2. Determine at least 2 roles you are interested in. Look at job postings to identify the skills needed for the role
3. Gain practical knowledge about the skills need. Education, YouTube, Udemy, etc. Download as much free software as you can and begin to learn.
4. Time. Allow yourself enough time to grow and become knowledgable about the role you are seeking to obtain.
5. Don’t be afraid to start with a basic IT role. You can learn a lot in this role about the job and more importantly how the company operates. You can also build connections with those in security and offer to help on menial tasks they may dread doing.
